Respite allows caregivers a break from providing care, while working to fulfill multiple needs of the one providing care, and the one needing care.
Understanding Respite Care
By definition, respite care is short-term care for people who receive in-home care by a family member or caregiver. Respite allows caregivers a break from providing care, while working to fulfill multiple needs of the one providing care, and the one needing care – without sacrificing quality of care.
In the USA today there are around 50 million people who are caring for family members including elderly parents, and spouses and children with disabilities and/or chronic illnesses. Without it, most of these cared for loved ones would require permanent placement in institutions or health care facilities. It’s common for caregivers/wellness partners whose loved one is in hospice to receive respite care. Respite care is a vital care service for those newly diagnosed or towards the end of their suffering.
Turning to respite care is not something to feel guilty about if you are a caregiver. Everyone needs a break to recharge their batteries or tend to other responsibilities. Remember, the quality of the care you provide CAN be impacted by being weary, tired or “burning the candle at both ends.” It’s about being able to step away knowing that the person is cared for in the best manner possible.
